MELBOURNE, October 23,
The Government have received tenders from the Aberdeen and Lund’s Linos in conjunction and Burt, Potter for the conveyance of frozen produce to London for the period from May, 1896, to May, 1897; for the first five months the service to be fortnightly, for the remainder of the period Weekly. The Aberdeen and Lund’s tender being the lowest was accepted.
SYDNEY, October 23.
The fire is well in hand in Block X., but it is smouldering in Block XL, where further considerable subsidence has taken place. The Cuzco has arrived and been quarantined. The Board of Health severely condemn the Melbourne authorities for allowing her to resume her voyage with a case of smallpox among a large number of healthy passengers, thus offering facilities for the spread of the disease. The Cuzco’s case is regarded as another proof of the necessity for federal quarantine. ADELAIDE, October 23.
The Sunbeam has arrived and left again for Melbourne. Lord Brassoy was welcomed by the Acting-Governor and a large number of yachtsmen.
BRISBANE, October 23. Sir H. Norman returns to England early in November.
