MELBOURNE, July 30.

A meeting of the shareholders of tho Mount Lyell - Company endorsed. • the action of the directors in issuing £150,000 worth of 6 per cent, debentures with the view of developing the. company. These debentures are to rank as a first charge on the property. A section of the shareholders had previously refused to endorse the issue.

In their half-yearly report, the directors of the Bank of Van Diemen’s Land state that owing to the failure of tho lottery it is feared that the entire liability of the shareholders will have to be called up. The liabilities are £350,000, a reduction of £606,000 since August, 1891. SYDNEY, July 30.

The banking returns of the colony for the June quarter show a decrease of liabilities to the extent of £423,000. Deposits bearing interest increased by £BO,OOO, those not bearing interest by £203,000. and private deposits increased by £30,000. The aggregate average assets decreased by £94,000 and the advances by £187,000. The note circulation decreased by £99,000. Coin and bullion were £423,000 in excess of the amount held at the end of the last corresponding quarter. The ‘ Herald,’ commenting on these returns, says: “The tendency shown in the previous year to withdraw money from fixed deposit has apparently ceased. Other noticeable features are that advances continue to shrink, the decline having been almost continuous for two years, and that, with a more ample supply of gold, the banks arc not anxious to force the note circulation. The reserves arc far in excess of what they were before the panic at the end of 1892.”
