DUNEDIN PROHIBITION LEAGUE.
Some forty persons attended the meeting of the Dunedin Prohibition League at the Young Women’s Christian Association rooms last evening, Mr F. Graham presiding, Twenty new members were proposed. The Chairman, in referring to the Temperance Conference which was held a few months ago, said be represented the League at the conference, which was attended by Sir William Fox, the Rev, Mr Isitt, qnd other representatives from the North, A difficulty presented itself at the conference as to what was to become of the New Zealand Alliance when an active organisation such as the Prohibition League waa being called into existence; bnt it was felt by all the representatives that the Alliance must exist, having done good work in the past. It was also felt that the Prohibition League having been called into existence mnst exist so long as the liquor traffic existed.—(Applause.) Mr Churchill moved the adoption of the report, the motion being seconded by Mr Manly, and carried, after being spoken to by the Rev, Mr Hinton and others, who testified to the good work that was being done by the distribution of the ‘Prohibitionist,’ two or three expressing the opinion that this movement was the beat that the Temperance party had set afoot in Dunedin. Mrs Trainer, in speaking to the motion, referred to the matter of Sunday trading, and suggested that there should be a vigilance committee appointed with the view of putting a stop to this evil. The Chairman also alluded to the same matter, and said that there did not seem to be an hotel in the City that regarded the law on this subject.
Mr A. S. Adams stated that he had received the drat number of the Oamaru edition of the ‘ Prohibitionist,’ and be learnt that they had successfully started a scheme there for the distribution of 2,000 ' Prohibitionist ’ newspapers in the Oamaru district for the next twelve months. He had, much pleasure, therefore, in moving—- “ That this League heartily congratulate the Oamaru Prohibition League upon the inauguration of their 1 Prohibitionist’ free distribution scheme, and trust that the same success will attend the movement in Oamaru as has been found to attend it in Dunedin.” Mr Powkll seconded the motion, which was carried.
