CITY POLICE COURT.

(Before Messrs A. Sligo and J. B. Thomson, J.P.s.)

Dbunkenness.—For this offence two first offenders were convicted and discharged. By-law Case.— David Flynn was charged with driving a vehicle at other than a walking pace while crossbg the intersection of Princes street with Moray place.—A plea of guilty was entered.—The police stated that the man drove his horse and spring oart at a gallop aoross the Moray place crossing. He had never been before the Court before, although he had been driving for a long time.—Fined Is, without costs.

Gaming.— Maurice Edward Barton was charged with having, at the Caledonian Grounds, on the Ist inst, played a certain game of chance.—Accused pleaded guilty, but said that he had not the slightest idea that he was doing wrong. The police never cautioned him.—The Sergeant-major of Police explained that the game was played with a board and marbles, and the holder of the winning number got the pool. They had the board in Court. Accused had scarcely any excuse to make, as he was before the Court before, and fined L 5 on another occasion, and he knew the law very well as to what was a fair and an unfair game.—Accused denied this, and said the game was played by letting six marbles go, and whichever got down the board through the pegs first won. —Sergeant-major Bevin: He knows it is a game of chance, therefore not right.—The Bench stated that they had had handed to them a certificate from Dr Jeffcoat that accused's wife was ill, and that the people were in indigent circumstances.—A fine of sa, without costs, was imposed, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment.
