BRIEF MENTION.
The general opinion in London is that Queensland ought to issue short-term Treasury bills or renew debentures for six months. It is reported the Queensland National Bank was ready to subscribe if the public had tendered up to one-hail the loan. Archbishop Croke, in a speech at Limerick, said he was greatly afraid the cause of Borne Rule was lost. People were utterly unfit to rule who sympathised with Parnell. Sergeant M'Lauchlin, of Violet Town (Victorian Rifles), won the first prize at the Wimbledon military tournament for tilting at the ring. Private Mawley, of Sale (Gippsland), tied for the first prize in tentpegging with the highest possible score. Mawley and Corporal Martin, of Thorna, tied with three others for the second prize at lemon-cutting. It is reported that the Chartered Companies' forces defeated the Portuguese volunteers on the River Uemba.
The Intentions of the New South Wales Government with respect to the recent vote on the want of confidence motion are not disclosed, and will not likely be known before Parliament meets again. Women in Sweden have been deolared not eligible for the General Methodist Conference, the votes having been taken all over the country. The Methodists in Germany have arrived at the same result.
Patagonia is the most recent addition to the ranks of frozen meat exporting countries —a result of course attributable to the employment of British capital. The country is said to be well adapted to the breeding of the hardier description of English mutton sheep. Lady Florence Dixie's last word on the women's franchise question is : Let woman try her hand at ruling. If she does no better than man, at least she cannot possibly do worse.
A lady of ninety-eight, the Marquise de Brives, who is without heirs, has, after providing for old domestics and poor friends, settled L 64.000 on Cardinal Lavigerie in return for an annuity of LI.OOO. The population of the Borough of Gore is 1,619, made up of 841 males and 778 females. The Mataura electorate, which includes Gore, has a total population of 8,846, of which 4,900 are males and 3,946 are females. Owing to the slight accident to the express train at Waipahi on Wednesday the stationmaßter, who is also telegraphist, was kept buys in the station yard, and could not attend to the wires, whereupon (says the ' Clutha Leader') the Hon. J. G. Ward, who was a passenger by the train, at once took his place in the office, receiving and despatching the messages with the utmost promptitude. We question if many PostmasterGenerals have ever been able to stop a gap in this praotioal manner. The North Auokland Cattle Board have resolved to recommend that a tax of five guineas be levied on every stallion, subject to its having been certified to by a veterinary surgeon as sound.
