WELLINGTON, December 20.
The Taniahere (Waikato) School Committee having protested against the regulation of the Auckland Education Board making the teaching of temperance compulsory, the Minister and Secretary of Education are of opinion that the regulation is too rigid, and that in agricultural districts it is not desirable that temperance should be substituted for agricultural chemistry. MASTERTON, December 20. The Waipawa Elaxmill, near Masterljon, was on fire this morning. The stock and machinery were totally destroyed. The mill was owned by Mr Joseph Wilson, who had no insurance on the stock or machinery. The buildings, which were formerly boilingdown works, were insured for L 350 in the South British, and the boiling-down plant for L 135 in the North British Office. NAPIER, December 20. The new cathedral of St. John's was conseorated to-day by the Bishop of Waipij. A half-holiday was observed in the town.
