AN ART SCHOOL FOR AUCKLAND.
A MUNIFICENT GIFT. The will of Dr Elam, an old Auckland settler, who died on Monday last, declared that when two annuities and a legacy have been provided for, the residue of his property shall be realised for the purpose of founding a permanent School of Art and Design, to be established in the city of Auckland. The school is to be known as the Elam School of Art and Design. It is provided that the annual interest from the realised residue of the estate shall be spent in the maintenance of such a school, to provide teachers, etc., and pay rent of the necessary premises in which art teaching shall be carried on until suoh time as a permanent building for the purpose is provided. The exact amount of the estate has not yet been ascertained, but it is considered probable that from L 7,000 to LIO.OOO will be realised for the benefit of the proposed School of Art and Design.
