(By Electeio Telegraph—Copybioht.l [Per Pbkss Association.] FRANCE PROTESTS AGAINST PROPOSED TAX ON WINES. London, April 24. (Received April 25, 1888, at 12.30 p.m.) M. Waddington, French Ambassador at London, has appealed to Baron De Worms and Lord Salisbury protesting'against the proposed tax on bottled wines. He urged that the practice existing between France and England in regard to wine duties was most favorable to England ; but added that if the proposed tax on bottled wines was insisted on by the English Government that the practice would be terminated and a reprisal might be looked for. FRENCH POLITICS. Paris, April 21. The Municipal Council have passed a resolution condemning the attitude and demonstrations of M. Boulanger, and have agreed to a vote of confidence in the Floquet Ministry. The students of the city have discontinued their demonstrations against M. Boulanger.

JUDICIAL.

Washington, April 24.

Mr Phelps, United States Minister at London, has been appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for the United States vice Morrison R. Waite resigned. The Hon. Mr Enticott, Secretary for War, will succeed Mr Phelps as United States Minister at London.

THE REWARD OF HEROISM. Sydney, April 25. (Received April 25,1888, at 1.5 p.m.) The House last night agreed to a vote of LI,OOO as a grant to the widow of Wirrill, gatekeeper at the Homebush railway station, who lost his life in unsuccessfully attempting to rescue a child wandering on the railway line from an approaching train. Sir 11. Parkes, in submitting the vote to the House, eulogised the action of Wirrill as an example of brilliant heroism.

FIRE IN SYDNEY,

Sydney, April 25.

An extensive three-storey grocery warehouse in George street, occupied by .Barlow Brothers, was considerably damaged by lire last night. The stock was insured for LI 2,500. The damage is estimated at LI 2,000 to LI 5,000.

EXTENDIVE EMBEZZLEMENTS. Sydney, April 25.

Bontield, postmaster at Palmer Island, Clarence River, lias been arrested for embezzling about LI,OOO of Government moneys.

The Railway Commissioners have definitely declined to appoint an independent board of inquiry into the charges alleged against Mr Alison Smith's management.

Mr Jilmcs Service is a candidate for a vacancy in the Legislative Council caused by the death of Dr Hearne, who represented the province of Melbourne. Mr Hearne's form as a member would have expired in November next.

DEPRESSION IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA. Perth (W.A.), April 25. There is great depression throughout the colony. At Rockingham, the centre of the Tarradalc jarrah timber industry, over 150 men have been thrown out of employment. VITAL STATISTICS. Sydney, April 25. (Received April 25,1888, at 3 10 p.m.) The Government statistician in a report states that the progress of the population of the Australasian colonies shows that the births last year were 120,000. The average per thousand to the population was 34.43. The deaths were 47,500, the average being 13.64. New Zealand showed the lowest birth rate, viz., 31.71 ; also the lowest death rate, viz., 10.17. The immigration returns were 247,000, and the emigration 182,000. The excess of immigrants over emigrants to New Zealand was only 977.

Captain Culbert, of the stranded ship Pleione, has been appointed to the command of the ship Pleiades, and he leaves for Lyttelton, where she is loading, to morrow. The Weatport Harbor Board have given all their permanent officers three months' notice and will dispense with others. They have also given the chairman power to take measures to assimilate wages to those paid in other parts of the colony.

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 25. The wife of Mr J. C. George died sud denly from heart disease this morning.
