FATAL FIRE.
- ♦ A fire broke out about one o'clock this morning in a detached lean-to in Use street, Oamaru, owned and occupied by an old woman named Mrs Dunn, and though it was attended with fatal results the local Press agent did not think it worth his while to acquaint us with the fact. From the 'North Ofcago Times' we learn that four feet in front of the lean-to was a two-roomed cottage, which was unoccupied. When the brigade arrived on the spot the lean-to was all ablaze. Captain Mainland was informed that the occupant of the place had not been seen, and it was feared Bhe was in the burning building. This proved too true. The brigade having got the fire under, broke down the charred weather-boarding and discovered Mrs Dunn lying with her face toward the floor in a curled-up posture. Her body was frightfully burned, and her face blackened beyond recognition. The police took charge of her remains, and conveyed them to the Shamrock Hotel, where an inquest will likely be held to-day. Mrs Dunn was an old inhabitant of Oamaru, and was some - sixty years of age. She was addicted to drink, and had been living apart from her i husband (who is working about Ngapara) i for the last eight or nine years. It is sup- j posed that Mrs Dunn had by acoident set fire to the place herself, and, being unable to cope with the flames, became their victim.
