AN INDIGNANT RETRENCHED OFFICER.

[Special to the Stab.] OHRISTCHURCH, March 31. Mr John Ollivier, R.M., in speaking on his retirement at the Ashburton Magistrate's Court on Thursday, expressed his thanks for the kindness that had always been expended towards him, and said he was retiring with very deep regret. Mr Ollivier explained the circumstances under which he had filled the position of Resident Magistrate at Lyttelton and Ashbuiton, and felt that he had been cruelly used by the Government after thirty years of public service. He hoped Aehburton would not be treated in the same way os Lyttelton, though he was given to understand that in future a magistrate would only visit Ashburton once a fortnight. He trusted that the day was not far distant when he would again be a candidate for parliamentary honors, and he would then have an opportunity of making his voice heard throughout the colony. | From Our Own Reporter.l Mr John Ollivier, having been retrenched out of the service, vows vengeance against the authorities. In taking leave of the Bar at Ashburton he said that he so keenly felt the manner of dispensing with his services that he would resign the multiplicity of posts he held and never take office under the Government again. He intends seeking Parliamentary honors on the first opportunity, and, if elected, promises Ministers a lively time.
