WELLINGTON, March 15,
Major-general Schaw delivered an interesting lecture to the volunteers last night on the Wellington defences, and announced that it was intended to erect a new battery at Melrose, in order to protect Haughton and Lyell Bay in event of a hostile attack on the city. CHRISTCHURCH, March 15. George Neuble, working at Chinnery’s flax-mill, Rangiora, had his right arm drawn into the scutcher this morning. It was so mangled that it had to be amputated close to the shoulder, TIMARU, March 15. A man named Smith, till lately an inveterate drunkard and now a prohibited person, was charged at the Police Court today by the licensee from whose barmaid he (Smith) had obtained two pints of beer, with inciting to the commission of an offence. The case was dismissed, the Bench holding that there was nothing in the Act to sustain such a charge.
