Silver shares arc still quiet, except those of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company’s mine, which are firmly held at about L4OO. New companies are being floated and discoveries made daily, particularly in the Tuena and Orange districts. Among the latter are said to be some valuable deposits of tin.

WHOLESALE MUNICIPAL SWINDLING.

It is stated that the Mayor’s special audit of the Corporation accounts has disclosed embezzlements to the amount of L 21,000. All the books and accounts from January, 1880, to June, 1881, have disappeared. Four officers of the Engineer’s Department will probably be suspended.

A match played between Vernon’s team and an eleven from the Melbourne Cricket Club for the benefit of Bates, was won by the former by live wickets. The highest scorers were—for Melbourne, MTlwraith 89 (not out) ; and for the Englishmen, Abel 92 (not out).

AN EXPORT RATE WANTED.

At a meeting of the Harbor Board an attempt was made to impose an export wharfage rate, in consequence of the heavy outlay the Board have been put in completing the wharf improvements and accommodation, which have exceeded L 750,000. The chairman ruled the motion out of order, as being opposed to the fiscal policy of the country.
