The market rate of discount has advanced to I g, and is now g below the Bank rate. Adelaide wheat (ex store) is unchanged at 34s 6d. New Zealand wheat is at 33s to 365, according to quality. Australian tallow remains at last quotation, viz., beef (average quality), 225; mutton, ditto, 235.

The election of a member for the Bridgeton Division of Glasgow, vacant by the resignation of Mr E. Russell (Home Ruler) resulted in the return of Sir George Trevelyan (a Gladstonian), who polled 4,654 votes against 3,253 by the Hon. Evelyn Ashley (Conservative). SUGAR BOUNTIES CONFERENCE. LONDON, August 3. (Received August 4, 1857, at 11.30 a.m.) tn the Hotise of Lords to-day the Mar* quis of Salisbury announced that Germany, Spain, and Belgium had, subject to certain conditions, assented to the British proposals that a oonferenee should be held to discuss the sugar bounties question. France has, however, replied to the proposal in an uncertain manner. NAVAL SHAM FIGHTS. LONDON, August 3. Naval evolutions on an extensive scale are now proeceding off the English coast, and at the chief ports several squadrons have been formed for the purpose. One commanded by Rear-Admiral Frecmantlo attacked and captured Falmouth, and sailed in (he direction of Dover, which was defended by a squadron under Vice-Admiral Sir W. Hewctt. Another squadron proceeded to the Mersey for the purpose of attacking Liverpool.

He states that he requested the King to grant an amnesty to the people who had been imprisoned for non - compliance with the religious laws, to which the King assented, promising freedom of worship to all his subjects. The Rev. Mr Baker’s deposition from the Premiership was at one time threatened.

The fleet which assembled at Spithead in commemoration of the Jubilee was engaged for some days in manteuvres, showing how the coast could be protected from attack. At Falmouth a squadron under Admiral Freemantle attacked the port and was vigorously resisted, the attempted capture of the land defences being unsuccessful. Mr Forman, of the Post Office, who recently Went to Rome to obtain a reduction of the transit rates, writes that the Italian postal authorities arc disposed to make a slight concession on the Australian mail tariff.

Bubear and Gaudaur return to England to row for the championship on the Thames, their intended visit to Australia being in consequence abandoned.

Annie Nolan, servant at Captain Rose’s, who figured as the heroine in a supposed robbery at Captain Rose’s, was arrested to-day on tho charge of being concerned in it.

The Royal Humane Society of Australia have forwarded to the Government one silver and nineteen bronze medals and seven certificates for distribution to deserving recipients in the Colony. Mr W. M. Maskell has compiled a book dealing with the insect pests of New Zealand. Copies have been sent to the agricultural authorities. The work is illustrated with plates executed at Wanganui. The Premier leaves for the South tomorrow.
