AUCKLAND, December 20. The following telegram has been received from Lord Rosebery by Mr J. M. Clarke, nayor :—" Very sorry we have to abandon our visit to Now Zealand. Have written Rosebery, Government House, Melbourne,'' NELSON, December 20. The only criminal case was against Evans and Halpine, who were indicted for stealing property in the assigned estate of Mrs Hutchison, and against David Davidson for receiving the same. The jury found a verdict of guilty against Evanß and Davidson, and acquitted Halpine, The Judge said that the case was not one of ordinary larceny, the prisoners' evident desire being to do a good turn to Mrs Hutchison, He sentenced them to one month's imprisonment without hard labor. CHRISTCHURCH, December 20. The Government have refused to alter their decision re giving work to the unemployed. The committee of the unemployed have resigned, after telling their comrades to reject or accept the offer (4s 6d per day) as each individual prefers. NAPIER, December 20. News has been received of the destruction by fire of Mr Finlayson's accommodation house at Moengiangi. The fire occurred through the accidental upsetting of a kerosene lamp. Insurances—Llso on the house and LIOO on the furniture in the National office.

At the Borough Council meeting last night the Mayor said that he hoped the question of lighting tho town with the electric light would soon take a practical shape.
