SPORTING NOTES.

The Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club passed the following resolution on Saturday evening:—" The Committee, fully recognising the necessity for such a work as the turf record, and believing that in the hands of Messrs Whet ham and Walker it will be ably carried out, have pleasure in subscribing the sum of LlO towards same, and will assist by any information in their power." At the Central Police Court at Sydney the proprietor of Bass's Hotel was summoned for allowing gaining on licensed premises. A club rents a room and carries on sweeps. Tho magistrates expressed their opinion that sweeps should be legalised, and fined the defendant in a nominal amount. The Interprovincial Cricket Match has been fixed for January 25, 26, and 28, at Dunedin. A team called the Dunedin Wanderers go up to Christchurch and play the Midland Club on Christmas and Boxing Days. C. Frith will be their principal bowler. The following well-known wrestlers are expected to take part in the Hibernian Society's sports on Boxing Day :—Messrs J. Thomas and E. Blackburn (of Victoria), J. Tyson, G. Robertson, J. Tiffin, W. Hudson, W. Thornton, and C. L'Estrange. Messrs Thomas and Blackburn, the Victorian wrestlers, intend visiting Dunedin at an early date with a view to arranging matches with Messrs Donald Dinnie and G. Robertson.

AUCKLAND TRAINING NOTES. [From Our Own Correspondent.] Salvage and Sir Bedevere arrived yesterday afternoon by the Takapuna. They were in charge of R. H. Vallance and Wattie Williams. The jockeys were also with the party. This morning I went out and saw Salvage do a quiet canter. He looks well, and both he and Sir Bedevere were landed without a scratch. Betting on the Cup is rather dull. Salvage is first favorite, but Tim Whiffier's supporters are very sanguine. This horse is doing remarkably well, and, bar accident, must run forward in the race. Libeller, Musketeer, Welcome Jack, and Envious are also in fine condition ; while among the two-year-olds nothing looks bolter than Krupp. Gretna Green is occasionally spoken of as a good outsider for the Midsummer Handicap. I think that the Cap should bo won by either

Salvage, Tim Whiffle*, Libeller, or Si* Bed* vere, Salvage's party stand to win ft mode* rate stake, and Sir Bedevere, it is sold, has been quietly supported for a thousand, though I cannot vouch for this. The present odds obtainable about the Cup are as follows ; Bto 1 against Salvage . " 4„1 „ Timlirhiffler 6„ 1 „ Welcome Jack and Sir 'Bedevere '••■■• 8„ 1 „ Nelson snd Esoopeta 10 „ 1 „ Libeller 12 ~ 1 „ Maori and Envious 15 „ 1 „ Fishwonian 20 „ 1 „ Musketeer and Vortex 25 „ 1 „ Soukar. Clarence is the favorite for the Steeplechase.
