AUCKLAND, December 13,
About a thousand persons assembled to-day at Exchange Hill to witness the sale of the wreck of the Triumph. The first lot offered was the cargo remaining in the ship, consisting of two cases, of the estimated value of LSOO, coal, and 300 tons of railway iron, The whole was sold for Ll3O, Mr Oxenham being the purchaser. The Haslam refrigerator was then offered, and realised L 320, Mr W. Aitken being the purchaser. The hull, machinery, anchors, etc., were then offered, and the bidding started at LSOO, the lot being knocked down at L 2.100 to Mr W. Aitken. The official inquiry at the instance of the Collector of Customs was called on at the Police Court to-day, but was adjourned. A medical society has been formed, Dr Kenderdine being elected president. WELLINGTON, December 13. The Australia, with the supplementary colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 9th inst. The Hon. Mr Rolieston leaves for Christchurch to-morrow, in order to be present at the opening of the Industrial Exhibition. He returns on Tuesday. The Hon. The Chamber of Commerce at their meeting to-day passed a resolution expressing thh deepest regret and indignation at the dilatoriness of the Ministry r& sending a vessel to search for the missing seamen at the Auckland Islands, and agreed that, failing immediate action on the part of the Government, a steamer should be at once chartered and despatched, the cost to be defrayed by public subscription. L 630 was guaranteed at the meeting. Hugh Flannagan, a patient at the Christchurch Hospital, who cut hia throat with a penknife during the absence of the nurse last night, died this morning. [From Oor Own Correspondent.] AUCKLAND, December 13. The Nathan Company have received a cablegram from Shaw, Savill-Albion Company stating: “We have chartered the Coptic; lonic, and Doric for three years or five years. Including our new steamers, these will form a monthly service.” The Bombay sailed from St. Vincent on the 9th. Advices also state that instructions have been issued to Dent Bros,, who are now building the Shaw, Savill-Albion Company’s newsteamers, to increase their engine-power.
