CALCUTTA, December 11. The various courts at the International Exhibition are nqW nearly completed. The Exhibition is a great success. Ninety thousand persons have already been adrhitted, and the number of visitors is increasing daily. THE SOUDAN REBELLION. CAIRO, December 11. The Arab hillmen are mustering in large numbers in the neighborhood of Souakim, and it is expected that they will make a night attack upon the garrison and town. H.M. gun-vessel Ranger, now cruising t off the coast is attacking the rebels with rocket fire with the view of preventing their approach against the town. MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. LONDON, December 10. Consols remain at 100g. New Zealand securities ;—Five per cent. 10-40 loan and 5 per cent. 1889 loan each declined 10s, and are quoted at 104$ and 103$ respectively; 4$ per cent. 1879-1904 loan remains lOlg ; and 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 100$. Adelaide wheat (ex store) is unchanged at 465, and New Zealand ditto at 38s 6d to 43s Bd. Adelaide flour (ex warehouse), 325. THE NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY. LONDON, December 11. To-day’s * Gazette ’ contains an order announcing that degrees conferred by the University of New Zealand will be recognised in England and throughout the British colonies. New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations :—Five per cent. 10.40 loan, 104$; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 103$; 4$ per cent 1879-1904 loan, 101|; 4 percent, inscribed stock, 15$. The market rate of discount has further advanced $, and is now at 2|. The bank rate is 3 per cent. There are no changes to report in the markets for colonial produce. MR PARNELL DENOUNCES THE IRISH EXECUTIVE. LONDON, December 12, (Received December 13,1883, at 1 a.m.) A meeting of the members of the Irish National League took place at Dublin yesterday, when Mr Parnell received the tribute Of the Various branches of the League to the amount of L 38,000, In the course of bis address to the meeting Mr Parnell made a bitter attack upon Earl Spencer (Viceroy) and Mr Trevelyan (Chief Secretary for Ireland). Mr Parnell, however, expressed full confidence in the ultimate success of the cause. THE MARQUIS OF LORNE ON FEDERATION. LONDON, December 12. At a meeting of the Colonial Institute last evening the Marquis of Lome, referring to the question of Federation, suggested that a council of colonial envoys should assemble in London to discuss the preliminary measures which should be adopted with the view of establishing a federated empire. It will be of a purely scientific character, and will start in February. A naturalist and a geologist have been engaged. An attempt will be made to penetrate into the centre of the country from the north or north-east coast; but it ia not intended to attempt further exploration on the Fly River, or to go over the ground already traversed by Captain Armit. A programme of thirty matches has been arranged for the Australian Eleven. It includes a match with the Oxford and Cambridge, two with the Gentlemen of England, two with the North of England, three with All England (at Manchester, Lords, and the Oval respectively), two with the Players of England, one with the South of England, and thirteen against county elevens. The county clubs of England have unanimously requested the Marylebone Committee to strictly enfore Law 10, which forbids throwing or jerking in bowling. (Received December 18, 1883, at 11.30 a.m.) Mr Percy Robin, of Adelaide, a student of St. John’s College, Cambridge, has been awarded first prize for the Colonial Institute’s essay. The Marquis of Lome, speaking at the Colonial Institute, expressed a hope that the Australian colonies would federate, and he insisted that England must recognise the colonies as being the best judges of their own wants. He urged the appointment of a council of envoys instead of a federal parliament. He eulogised the activity of the Australian colonies in the matter of defences. Sir Alexander Galt suggested that English diplomatists might devote more attention to improving the commercial relations between the Mother Country and her colonies. The Duke of Albany was present, and there was a crowded audience, LONDON, December 12. Signor Gniseppe Mario, the celebrated tenor, is dead, aged seventy-five years. Mr Parnell has refused to coalesce with the Liberal party until they consent to abandon the policy of coercion and emigration.

It is reported that a party of Royal Engineers will be sent to fortify the town of Assoura, sitnated near the first cataract of the Nile, and guarding the approaches to Upper Egypt. The Egyptian garrison has abandoned Suikab, and a force of 15,000 rebels is stated to be holding the passes of the Soudan. The applications for shares in the New Zealand Mortgage Company are in excess of the number open for allotment. The wheat shipments from Victoria to arrive have been sold at 455; and 45s 9d has been offered for 500 quarters of Adelaide wheat.
