CRISIS IN FRANCE.
MACMAHON RESIGNS. GREVY ELECTED PRESIDENT. [Reuter’s Telegrams.] PARIS, January, 28. Marshal MacMahon refuses to accede, to changes in the anti-Republican commanders of army corps which the Ministry desired to make, and recently declared, he would avoid doing so unless the consequences proved detrimental to the nation. The Marshal threatened to resign rather than that the army should be disorganised. The majority in the Chambers intimate that if the resignation be tendered they will accept it. LONDON, January 29. Marshal MacMahon, persisting in his refusal to change commanders, has virtually resigned. He will probably formally resign to-morrow. The Congress, Senate, and Chamber of Deputies will then meet and elect a successor. P ■ January 30. The probable candidates for the Presidency are M. Grevy, President of the Chamber of Deputies; and Admiral Pothuau, Minister of Marine and the Colonies. Later. Marshal MacMahon has resigned. The Senate and Chamber of Deputies w’ere specially convoked to elect a successor. Evening. M. Grevy was elected by a large majority, and has been proclaimed President of the Republic for seven years. January 31. The Ministry remain in office, the President refusing to accept their resignation. Marshal MacMahon retires into private life. M. Gambetta has been elected President of the Chamber of Deputies. '
