CHRISTMAS LEAVE
BRITISH TROOPS' COMPLAINT Rec 12.40 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 21. The War Office cites the length of service, without home leave, of New Zealand troops waiting for repatriation from Italy, in replying to complaints by British troops who are missing spending Christmas at home because the liner Orion is leaving Liverpool for Italy on December 23. The Orion is scheduled to pick up New Zealanders in Italy after disembarking the Britishers. . The War Office said: "The New Zealand troops have not even had home leave since 1940. They have been through Greece and Crete and the major campaigns in the Middle East. The British troops have already had leave, and are not entitled to extra Christmas leave." The Orion is carrying 3000 artillerymen, engineers, and signallers, many of whom complain that they have not spent Christmas at home since 1939.
