FIRES IN SUBURBS

A gorse fire in Ribble Street, Island Bay, yesterday afternoon was attended by two machines from the Central Fire Station and two from Constable Street. Fanned by a strong northerly wind, the fire spread in the area between Severn and Ribble Streets, and one call reported flames less than four feet away from some houses. The brigade fought the flames five hours, and although a considerable amount of gorse was burned no damage was done to houses.

Some sawdust which caught fire in a disused shed in Hospital Road at about 7.30 last evening resulted in the attendance of one machine from the Central Fire Station. The fire was extinguished by bucket pumps.

One engine from the Brooklyn station answered a call at 7.17 p.m. to a fire at 46 Wallace Street. The fire was extinguished by bucket pumps.
