SHIP HELD UP
DISPUTE OVER VJ DAY PAY
A dispute between the crew and the Holm Shipping Company about payment for work on VJ Day has delayed the departure of the Holmdale, which should have sailed from Wellington for Wanganui at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. On yj Day the Holmdale i arrived in Wellington about midday, and the original agreement between the company and the crew was that the crew should be paid for half of VJ Day and receive a whole day off. Now, however, the men demand that in addition to the whole day off they should also receive a full day's pay for VJ Day. The ship's departure, which was delayed till 6 o'clock last evening, was again postponed until today, but Captain Holm stated this morning that he had been advised by Mr. S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, that after discussion with the crew Ihe dispute had been settled and the Holmdale will now be able to sail this evening. Three Union Steam Ship Company vessels are also delayed in Wellington through shortage of crew. The ships which were still in port this morning are the Wingatui, which was due to sail for Westport on August 25, the Poolta. which was to have left for .Greymouth on August 29, and the Kaimai, which should have sailed for Greymouth at 10 o'clock last night. j
