VOICE OF THE PEOPLE
EFFECT IN ARGENTINA
NEW YORK, July 7
General Farrell, President of Argentina, in a speech, undertook to ca^L "absolutely free" elections before the end of the year. The Buenos Aires correspondent of the "New York Times", .points out that the .general practice in Argentina is to hold the elections 90 days after they are called. Hence the' election vote may be February or March, 1946. General Farrell's promise of free, honest elections is regarded as the greatest victory the Argentine people have yet won against the military Government in their fight to regain constitutional rights, says the correspondent. The popular cry had reached such a pitch in recent days that it could no longer be ignored. It was noted that Farrell spoke in a moderate tone and seemed eager to decrease the mounting tension. This contrasted markedly with the recent utterances of the Minister of Defence, Colonel Peron, which seemed to be inviting rather than avoiding bloodshed.
