LATE MR. CURTIN
FUNERAL AT PERTH
PERTH, July 8
The remains of the late Prime Minister (Mr. Curtin) were laid to rest this afternoon in Karrakatta Cemetery, in the presence of many thousands of people, who had gathered from all parts of Australia. Leaving Canberra on Friday afternoon, the plane conveying Mr. Curtin's body to Western Australia stopped the night at Adelaide and reached Perth on Saturday afternoon. The Duke of Gloucester placed his own plane at the disposal of Mrs. Curtin, who, accompanied by the Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Forde) and other prominent members, flew from Canberra to Perth on Saturday.
This afternoon Mr. Curtin's body was conveyed on a gun-carriage from a mortuary chapel near his home in the suburb of Cottesloe through crowded streets to the cemetery, where, in the presence of Mrs. Curtin, members of the Federal and State Parliaments, representatives of the Labour movement, and trade unionists of Western Australia, it was laid in its last resting place. The casket was covered by the Union Jack and the Australian flag, and floral tributes covered a large area surrounding the grave.
