PORT OF BASSEIN
REACHED BY BURMA FORCE
LONDON, May 25
Allied troops in Burma have reached the important inland port of Bassein, states a South-east Asia Command communique. The troops sailed up the Bassein River to the port and found it clear of Japanese. The main jetties had been destroyed, but the small ones are in fair condition.
The enemy in the central sector are still maintaining a bridgehead west of the Irrawaddy River at Kama, and are attempting to get their troops across to move them eastward. Mopping up continues satisfactorily elsewhere.
