DEATH STAND
EXPECTED IN SOUTH
Eec. 1.45 p.m. NEW YORK, May 25. Tokio radio predicted that the Americans would soon attempt a landing: on Mamami Island, between Okinawa and Japan. Organised Japanese resistance has collapsed at the eastern end of the Okinawa line below Yonabam. The United Press correspondent on Guam reports that the Japanese are believed to have begun to fall back for a death stand in the 32 square miles of the southern tip of the island. Dispatches reported that the 7th Division had slashed its way almost two miles south of Yonabaru against isolated and disorganised opposition. The division is within seven miles of Okinawa's southern coast.
Observers believe the Japanese holding Shuri and Naha may be rearguards protecting the flight of the main forces into a new defence line to the south.
