JAPS ON OKINAWA
COLLAPSE IN ONE SECTOR
WASHINGTON, May 25
Organised Japanese resistance has collapsed in south-east Okinawa, exposing Shuri, reports the United Press correspondent from Guam. The marines clearing out Naha, are using flamethrowers and grenades to blast the Japanese from the strongpoints.
Admiral Nimitz's communique says, that the enemy made several small air raids against our forces at Okinawa yesterday, causing minor damage to a light unit. \ Heavy mud hampered the movement of the 10th Army in southern Okinawa. The '6th Marine Division constructed two bridges across the Asator River under the fire of enemy artillery and sent infantry elements in force to the south bank bridgehead. After sharp fighting the 7th Division made important advances. . ' A Japanese communique today claimed that airborne suicide troops landed on two American-held airfields on Okinawa, destroying aircraft installations and munitions. The communique added that the suicide air corps is fiercely assaulting surface craft in Okinawa waters. Allied headquarters in the Pacific is silent on the Japanese Claim.
