NEWS OF LANDING

DUTCH FORCES' ENGAGED

(Special P.A. Correspondent.)

SYDNEY, May 2.

The invasion of Dutch Borneo is understood to be a combined Austra-lian-Netherlands operation, apart from the naval support. Strong naval units of Admiral Nimitz's command (possibly British) are backing up the landing, but it is understood that rio American troops are involved.

Though no official Allied announcement of its location has yet been made, it is understood that, as stated by the Japanese, the initial landing was made on the island of Tarakan, off the east coast of Borneo. ~ , ~ Tarakan is a big oil port and would be a rich prize for the Allies. Despite the fact that the installations there were destroyed by the Dutch and the subsequent work by the Japanese was partly nullified by American and Australian air attacks, high quality oil is probably more easily recoverable at Tarakan than anywhere else in the Pacific. •
