MAN FROM THE HILLS
DID NOT KNOW WAR WAS ON NEW YORKj February 25. A man who fled to the Idaho hills in 1932 because he did not like Mr. Roosevelt as President has been arrested for draft evasion. • Federal agents surprised William Morland, aged 44, in his cave home in the hills. He was ragged, bearded, and dirty. He did not know the present war was on. and was at first startled and later delighted when told Mr. Roosevelt was . still President. Morland said he had lived on raw meat and berries. "I went into the hills when Roosevelt beat Hoover in 1932," he said. "I do not like F.D.R., but I wish I had learnt three years ago that he had a war on his hands; I would have forgotten my grudge against him and come out of the hills to help beat Hitler and Tojo. Maybe I am wrong about Roosevelt, because a guy who can win four terms as President—two in wartime—must have what it takes."
