FRIGATE SINKS U-BOAT

RUGBY, April 5. While engaged on escort duty in the North Atlantic recently, a Canadian frigate destroyed a U-boat which was attempting to attack a valuable convoy, states an Admiralty communique. The Waskesiu carried out a series of attacks with depth charges which apparently mortally damaged the submarine and forced it to the surface. The frigate illuminated it with a starshell and in company with the frigate H.M.S. Nene opened fire on the Üboat. Hits scored by the frigates prevented the crews of the U-boat manning the guns, and a few minutes later the enemy sank stern first. Nineteen survivors were picked up by the British ships and made prisoners of war. A naval correspondent says that tiie Waskesiu is the first frigate ever built in Canadian yards.—B.O.W.
