Old Timer writes: "I saw a Martello Tower years ago before I came here. I didn't find out who Martello was,. Was he an architect?" No, he wasn't. Those Towers were; built along English coasts as forts tpresist a threatened invasion by Napoleon. They are of no particular importance in this war. They got their name from a place in Corsica, where there is an old fort of the same shape. * * ♦ EDITOR AT WORK. Talking of blunders in print:—Brefc Harte must have been a very young editor, says Edmund Pearson, and in,* experienced in correcting proofs, when he was conducting the "Weekly Gazette" of Red Dog. He wrote the obituary notice of a most respectable lady, Mrs. Euphemia McGilligan, arid closed with the remark that "above, I all the ladies of this town she was distinguished for her charity." This; came back from the press-room: "dis--tinguished for her chastity." Instead, of making the correction, Harte merefr ly put a mark of query on the margin of the proof, with the result that,, next day, Red Dog saw in its newspaper that "Mrs. McGilligan above aIL the ladies of this town was distin,? guished for her chastity (?)"
