WELLINGTON TROTS

RUNNERS WITH PROSPECTS

Tall Timber, who figures among the acceptors for both unhoppled events at the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting at Trentham on Saturday, attracted attention to his future prospects by scoring an effortless win at Auckland last season, but his subsequent form showed a lapse. He was given a spell, and his recent efforts have shown that this has improved him, and it would not be surprising to [find him playing a prominent part on j the trip. 1 No Form. —The Tinwald trainer D. McKendry does not travel far unless he has prospects of winning a race, and for this reason alone Milly Wrack is likely to come in for serious attention when she parades in the Army Handicap at Trentham on Saturday Actually, she has no form to commend her, but she is a daughter of Wrack, and this breed can usually be relied upon to give -of sound performances at the trotting gait. Showing Improvement.—When raced last season Free Bond showed any j amount of speed but developed the; bad habit of breaking at the start, ] and it was not until last weekend at the Combined Meeting at Wingatui that she succeeded in breaking her maiden status. That her connections were sanguine of success is revealed by the fact that she started a warm favourite. She is down to contest both the Roosevelt and U.S. Fleet Handicaps at Trentham on Saturday, and providing she gets away on reasonable terms with the opposition she should be in the money. Converted Trotter. —Safari, who won races at the pacing gait prior to being changed to the unhopple.d department, is reported to be quite a smart performer in the latter sphere, and it is worth recalling that she scored over a mile and a half at Hawera .in the smart time of 3min 36sec. At her next appearance she was placed behind her stablemate Sea Meal. Safari, who is by Red Shadow, is dually engaged on Saturday, and will have to be considered in either event. Nicely Placed. —Azim, who figures on the 36 yards mark in the Navy Handicap, was a winner of the Longbeach Handicap at Ashburton in June, scoring from 36yds and covering the mile and a half in 3min 35 3-ssec. A repetition of that form would give him a chance against the comparatively weak class he will be up against on Saturday. Wellington Stakes.—There is every likelihood of an exceptionally good field parading for the Wellington Stakes to be run on the second day of the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting at Trentham. but unless the unforeseen happens during this weekend's racing it will be surprising to find anything ousting Captain Morant from the position of warm favourite. He is particularly smart and his efforts on Saturday will be scanned, with plenty of interest.
