Auckland. — Police Constable Herbert Hunter Barrett, who pleaded guilty last week to having attempted to murder Mate Urlich, was sentenced by Mr. Justice Fair to seven years' imprisonment with hard labour.—P.A. In the area o3 the gap in the Owen Stanley mountains the Japanese have launched a heavy infiltrating attack which i;; making headway. They have outflanked our positions, and fighting in now going on some 40 miles from Port Moresby.
