MEAT ARRANGEMENTS

IMMEDIATE REVIEW FELT

NECESSARY

Agreement that, in view of Mr. Churchill's speech about the gravity of the situation, the whole question of meat arrangements should be reviewed, was expressed at the quarterly meeting of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union yesterdayi

It was felt that under present circumstances the Dominion could have no consideration whatever for her own convenience, and that steps should be taken immediately to. see that the meat sent to Britain was that class of meat which gave the greatest possible amount of nutrition in the smallest cargo space. This meant that, for one thing, the question of the encouragement of lightweight lambs would have to be reconsidered.

The general feeling was that this encouragement of the lighter-weight lamb was very largely to suit New Zealand's convenience, but that if shipping was to be utilised to its maximum capacity the only consideration which should affect the class of meat shipped was that of nutrition value. The executive felt that the views of the United Kingdom Ministry of Food on this matter should be obtained without delay.
