NEW PRESIDENT
HORTICULTURAL INSTITUTE
The annual meeting of the Royal New '■ Zealand Institute of Horticulture opened in Wellington yesterday, Mr. F. S. Pope presiding over a good attendance. Mr. Pope, in moving the adoption of the annual report, said that the institute had managed to hold its own through a difficult year, although the educational programme had been adversely affected. He commented upon the timely assistance given by the Government to the fruit industry, and expressed his opinion that in view of the acute position some action would also have to be taken about the veget. ble supply. That matter, however, was the subject 'of a remit and would
be fully considered later,
Mr. Pope added that all would regret the resignation of the secretary, Mr. G. S. Nicol, who had given long and faithful service". 'He himself would not be seeking re-election as president, an office which he had filled for five years.
The meeting subsequently unanimously elected Mr. Hope B. Gibbons as president, tribute being paid to his interest in horticulture in all its aspects.
