SHARP ENCOUNTERS
PATROLS ON BATAN
(Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 25. The United States War Department communique saysHhat in the Philippines theatre there sharp encounters between patrols along the line in Batan. Small elements of United States troops were uniformly successful in aggressive local action. In the Netherlands East Indies a formation of nine Japanese bombers protected by 14 fighters was intercepted over Java by seven American pursuit planes and turned back. One enemy bomber and one fighter were shot down. . Four other enemy bombers and two fighters were damaged. - The United States planes had ■no losses.—B.O.W- •
