IDLE TALK

SPREADING RUMOURS

WARNING BY THE MAYOR

A warning and an appeal have been made by the Mayor to the people of Wellington to stop pass-

ing on silly rumours and dangerous

rumours to others, with the stories "snowballing and twisting^ as they

"Lots of silly rumours have lately been circulating through the community," said the Mayor. "The origin of many of them is said to be from enemy radio stations. The circulation of these and the passing on of propaganda from enemy stations is simply playing the enemy's game for him.

"The sole object of putting over this propaganda is to lead credulous people to spread it and weaken morale. This sort of thing should be stopped, and people should have more sense than to allow themselves to become enemy agents, which is actually the part they are unwittingly playing.

"The best thing that any patriotic New Zealander can do when he hears anyone talking in this silly way is to shut him up."
