TERRACE TUNNEL SITES

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Attention has been drawn to a statement reported to have been made by a seismologist that the proposed, position of the air-raid tunnel urider Wellington Terrace is one of the most vulnerable spots in New Zealand for earthquakes. As many of Wellington's chief buildings are situated along this line, and as no movements have occurred albng this scarp fbr at least brie hundred years, the possibility of movements taking place in the immediate future is very remote. Earthquakes are so 'rare that in the event of a raid most of us would prefer to risk the chance of earth tremors rather than Japanese ■ bombs. Some doubt has been thrown on the feasibility of cbftstructing turinels in the rocks of Wellington, but it is obvious from the many turinels, old arid j new, in this city that the greywacke does hot present any great difficulty to tunriellers. —We are, etc., GEOLOGISTS.'
