JEERING AT THE HOME GUARD

j (To the Editor.) Sir, —It is as surprising as it is disgusting to read that there are ablebodied meri who jeer at the Home Guard. One had thought that this sort of infantile anti-social action, had died i with. the old Voluriteer system. But there is a remedy, and why isn't it applied? The Home Guard, I take it, is part of the armed forces of the Crown, and is it not an offence to bring those forces into ridicule or contempt? A case of the early days of compulsory training before the last war may be recalled. A unil wai parading for the first time in a country town. A man on the footpath called out "Left, right!" in a jeering tone. The officer ifi command of the parade at once called a policeman and charged the man, who wag a member of the local boroUgh council. A fine was imposed and th? publicity given to the case probably did the new Territorial scheme a lot of good. I suggest that the next time anyone makes fun of the Home Guard in public a charge should be laid as promptly. I'll Warrant th 6 bftender gets short shrift from the Bench.—l am, etc., ' A.M.
