"Rhododendron Days" for Plunket Aid,
I The rhododendron dell in the) grounds of the Karitane Hospital, Mcl- j rose, which now presents a magnificent sight, will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday afternoon a charge will be made for admission, and afternoon tea will be available for a small additional charge. Buses will leave Courtenay Place as advertised. On Sunday afternoon a silver coin collection will be taken in aid of hospital funds. From Tuesday to Friday of next week the Plunket Society will run a shop in the "Mockador" premises, Lambton Quay. All proceeds will be used to maintain and extend the society's work: in_. the Wellington district Over 1000 Soldiers Entertained. A Lower Hutt concert party, comprising Heather and Margaret Wright, Freda Cooper, Elva White, Joan Baldwin, Pamela Trimmer, Eileen Hickey, Don Bowers, and Jim Clarke, with Mrs, Boyd as pianist, entertained over 1000 soldiers at Trentham Camp on Monday. The programme was arranged by Miss Freda Cooper, who, on behalf j of the party, was cordially thanked by Major Chandler. Prior to the sing-. ing of the National Anthem the^j^rly, and the 'audience; stood for*-~©ne: minute's silent prayer. "~ - Singer's Own Composition. Both music and words of the vocal duet "Nocturne," sung by Mesdames C. W. Taylor and H. T. Eggers at yester- j day's meeting of the Wellington League j of Nations Union, were composed by Mrs. Taylor. Mrs. Stanley Fearn was ] the accompanist. The meeting was held in the Lyceum Club rooms and Professor Leslie Lipson was the speaker: '[ Bridge Afternoon at Wadestown. The successful bridge party, held in the parish hall, Wadestown, recently, was organised by the Wadestown branch of the Women's National Re-j serve, in'aid of funds -to assist the Residential Nursery. The guests were received by Mrs. W. B. McKenzie, and afternoon tea was provided by the committee, assisted by Mesdames Otway, Sleeman, and Thomson. Double Wedding at Kaponga. i Taranaki's best-known twins, the Murphy sisters, of skiing and radio fame, were married at Kaponga last week, Miss Joan Murphy to Mr. T. H. | Braun, who, is in charge of the field work in the Superior Oil Company's geophysical survey in the Manawatu area, and Miss Patricia Murphy to Flying Officer P. R. McNab, R.N.Z.A.F.,! an instructor at Ohakea. Flight Lieutenant Ainsworth, chaplain at the Ohakea Station, assisted by the Rev. Father McGlone, performed the ceremonies. Both the bridegrooms ski, Mr. Braun being particularly proficient and able to.beat his wife in a straight race. He cqmes 'from Los Angeles and intends taking his bride back to California in a few months. Mrs. McNab will live for. the present in Palmerston North.
