ART GALLERY CONCERTS

. ;— —♦- The last of the series of concerts arranged by the New Zealand Academy jof Fine Arts, to raise money for the i Patriotic Fund took place yesterday | afternoon when the Art Gallery was packed with an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. Mr. Ernest Hunt, vice-president of the academy, in the absence of Mr. G. G. Watson, president, spoke about the objects of the concerts and the great success they had been. He thanked her Excellency Lady Newall, who was present, for the interest she had taken and for attending so many of the concerts. He also thanked the musicians who had generously . giveA. their services. Mr. Hunt paid a tribute to Mrs. Murray Fuller, whose idea the concerts were and who had carried through the organisation from the inception. The programme was provided by Mr. Lloyd Powell/professor of pianoforte at the Royal College of Music, London, who gave a pianoforte recital. His selections were varied and interesting ranging from the works of the old masters to the modern composers. In his playing he showed his scholarly musicianship, wide range of tonal effects, and that happy blending of the intellectual with the emotional. The audience showed its appreciation with prolonged and enthusiastic applause, and Mr. Lloyd Powell played a Chopin "Nocturne" as an encore. Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, and Lady Batterbee were present.
