ACTIONS IN MEDITERRANEAN
(Rec. 2.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. An Australian warship has returned to home waters after serving for six months in the Mediterranean: In that period many hundreds of bombs were aimed at her, but she was hit only once. She played a part in the Battle of Matapan, helped in the bombardment of the Libyan coast, took off hundreds of men from Greece and Crete, and bombarded Vichy forces on the Syrian coast. Four of her complement were decorated for gallantry in fighting a fire which broke out in an ammunition ship which was lying 30 feet away from her stern in Malta harbour. A bomb which struck the warship killed four of the crew and eight soldiers who were being evacuated from Crete. The explosion damaged the ship, but she was able to carry on and took all the troops safely to Alexandria. | On many occasions bombs just j missed her. Officers said that during the j worst attacks the ship was dripping with water thrown up by the bomb explosions.
