BRIDEGROOM EASILY

HURDLES TO STREAMLINE

(0.C.) ■ HAMILTON, May 17. Serving as it does as a dress rehearsal for the Great Northern fixture, considerable interest was centred in the Waikato Autumn Meeting, which opened at Te Rapa today. Conditions were excellent, and the large crowd were treated to some splendid racing. Betting was brisk, the totalisator handling £57,199,' compared with £49,333 10s for the, opening day last year. Bridegroom was responsible for an excellent Great Northern Trial when he carried off the Te Rapa Steeplechase. His stable-mate, Riotous, as at Egmont, was responsible for making the pace, but unlike on that earlier occasion Bridegroom made no mistake when moving up to challenge and it was the veteran who marred his brilliant fencing by crashing at the secondlast obstacle, when he was undoubtedly tiring. Baldric fell at the same fence and the mishap left Bridegroom in an unbeatable position. Dozie Boy finished fairly well to get up for second place, but En Tour was a poor third. Aussie Ra was pulled up early after hitting the first fence hard, being lame afterwards, and the only* other G.N. Steeplechase candidate to make a showing was Gar Vaals, who was prominent until the closing stages. Twelve months ago Streamline prefaced his G.N. Hurdles victory at Ellerslie with a third in the Waikato Hurdles, but he unproved on his earlier Te Rapa effort by taking the honours today from The Dozer It was not till the closing stages that the southerner put in an appearance, ana his effort was very; convincing., Nitnmount and Black Musk were responsible for the pace, but The Dozer took command nearing the home turn and was promising to be the winner until Streamline came through. Gold Spot might well have played ajpart m the finish, but a dangerous competitor was removed when he and Master Appellant collided in the air when negotiating the last hurdle, the inside panel of which was down. . . Although not seen in a Dumping role, King Rey drew attention to his G.N. Hurdles prospects when he staged a return to winning form' by taking the President's Handicap after , leading practically throughout. Both^ The Cardinal and Dv Mauner were finish, ing on Six years ago King Key won thl same event, and his performance of today will gain him friends for his later jumping engagements.
