TENACITY SUCCEEDS

BEAU CIEL AGAIN

GOOD TURNOVER AT OTAKI

Despite the local body elections, < there was a very large crowd in at- > tendance on the opening day of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter ] Meeting on Saturday, and the flow of ] money through the totalisator was still ; very free; For the seven events the : investments were £ 18,067, compared with £15,801 10s for eight events last < May, an increase of £2265 10s. . ] The weather was springlike up till < the second race, but then dark clouds and a chill atmosphere came over sud- 1 denly as a reminder that it is only < the beginning of Winter, and within i an hour it was raining lightly, though i later it cleared again. ■ ■ - . i The Otaki course has rarely been in ] better order, and its present condi- ] tion pays high tribute to the care that j has been taken with it in recent, years, j The two open handicaps were secur- j ed for the favourites, but otherwise ] this division suffered regular reverses. - t W J. Broughton, with a big following ] in every race, failed to land a win- ; ner. The apprentice, S. Waddell, had j a successful day by capturing half the . flat events on Beau Ciel, Myarion, and • Star Zone. r. j NINTH LINK TO CHAIN. i Beau Ciel added the ninth link to ; the chain of victories he has been , building up since January when he ] hung on just long enough to stall oft , a challenge from Gladynev- in the , Raukawa Handicap. He took charge ] when Sir Crusoe began to stop near . : the five furlongs, opened up a .break , on Gladynev and The Monarch, and ( then showed real gameness under , challenge. In two months he has earn- ; ed over £1000 for Mr. R. J. Murphy. 3 Gladynev ran probably his best race j since his return from Australia, only 3 the winner's tenacity preventing j his : reaching the post first. The Monarch ; also challenged, but he had too much , leeway to make up with pace so hot over the last half-mile Sir : Crusoe broke down and did not com- ; plete, so that the Turf has probably , seen the end of him for■ some time- : Noble Fox, beaten m the last stride . at Egmont, was always in a winning , position in the Huia Handicap. _ He raced facilely past Grandora and Wakarara rounding.to the straight, and he was never actually menaced by bur-veyor-General's vigorous challenge. Surveyor-General . drew the wide marble and was forced over extra ground most of the way. Endorsement, hanging to the fence, gained third dividend from Lady Montana, Grandora, and -Night Eruption. NOVICES TO FORE. Regicide, comfortable winner of the Ta7a?ua Hack Hurdles from Colibn and Golden Memory, the only pair who threatened him over the last seven furlongs, was making his debut, in the role, and so was Colibn. Regicide was a champion hack winner, also at long odds, on the course last season, otherwise his form has been moderate. His jumping was good, but Colibri was inclined to run about.a bit early Baron Bold refused to go away at altand Raana, Selkirk and Wenewene were very slow to _start. * Master Cyklon fell at the first fence and Harbour Bar, the leader for half a SJckySu had too many guns for her opponents in the Kuku^Maiden Flat but she might have had to show a bit more than she did if The Wanton had been better placed to the rtraght ' This winner is a three-year-old fullsister to Noble Fox, whose colours she also ca?ries, and she was having only her second outing this season, though as an early two-year-old she was sec- . XS fourth. Molly Molone covered extra ground and Eastern Sport missed the jump. MODEL OF CONSISTENCY. Talenta, though she was winning ong her fourth race to date in the Otaki Hack Handicap and still has £50 io go to emerge from hack class,,has been a model of consistency this season, as shehaionly twice failed to weigh .. in in 19 startsf This three-year-old Tiderace filly is now very solid over the closing stages of her races^^n^ on Saturday she came from five places back to wear down Sceptre who had made the running from Jitmark and La Rosita. War Credit and Little Margot finished on better than Pitmark . who was a prospect till inside the last fUMyafion, who has recently been showing place promise, returned to the wfimng list after an absence of over twelve months whe^ she steadiy overhauled the pacemakers, Pretty Lass and Courting; over the last furlong of the TeHoro Hack Handicap. The success was well anticipated by her connections, though Sanction,, was the actual favourite. Courting finally just outstayed Pretty Lass, and Acrobat finished through from the rear for fourth after a chequered.passage. Sanction had every chance. Star Zone was a runaway victor of the Waitohu Hack Handicap over the closing section.- She was still fifth on lie ton, but then Sweet Anne went off the course, carrying out Calliope and Ringling, and a wide gap was Jeft open for the winner. Star Zone does not win often, but when she does it is usually easily. Parlato, always handy, escaped the trouble and ousted Sweet Anne from second, with Leighon Rei running on fourth.
