COL. D. N. W. MURRAY TO COMMAND

A DISTINGUISHED CAREER

The Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) announced today that Colonel D. N. W. Murray* C.M.G., D.5.0., M.D., of Auckland, has been appointed Officer Commanding H.M. hospital ship Maunganui, which will go into commission in the near future. Colonel Murray has been Regional Deputy under the National Medical Committee for the Auckland district since the beginning of the war, and is responsible for the organisation and control of Civilian Medical Boards, whose function is the medical examination of soldiers for enlistment and discharge.

He has had a long and distinguished military career, which commenced in 1900 when he served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in the South African War. Colonel Murray's serr vice in New Zealand dates from 1908, when, in the volunteer days, he joined the N.Z.M.C. and was actively connected with the corps until the outbreak of the Great War. In 1914 he volunteered for service and was sent overseas as Officer Commanding No. 2 Field Ambulance. For service in the field he was three times mentioned in dispatches, awarded the D.5.0., and later had the C.M.G. conferred upon him.

At the conclusion of the war he was appointed Assistant Director of Medical Services for the New Zealand Division. On his return to New Zealand in 1919 he acted for some, months as Officer Commanding the military annex of the Auckland Hospital. Upon his relinquishing that appointment he still maintained his interest in the N.Z.M.C., with which he v/as actively associated until posted to, the Reserve cf Officers in 1921.
