ITALY FALLING
MR. SPENDER'S VIEW
HOPE OF PEACEFUL PACIFIC
.! LONDON, January 12. The Australian Minister of War, Mr. P. C. .Spender, who is on his way home from Egypt, said in a broadcast from Singapore that Italy is showing . every sign of collapse: "It is time," he said, "that the Italians realise that as their defeat becomes more certain Germany will seek to take con- - trol of Italy."
Mr. Spender expressed the hope that
Japan would realise that it was in her interests to maintain friendly relations with the British Empire. "Australia
and Singapore are linked together as
■:'.vital parts of the Empire defences," he •-said, "and indeed, are ..dependent on ■ tach other. We have no quarrel with Japan. We in Australia hope to keep .the Pacific for all time true to its name." ,
