TASMAN LINER HITS WHALE
Crossing the Tasman to Sydney, an American liner rammed a whale, which clung to the bows until the engines were stopped. It then dropped off and drifted astern. An hour or so before the crash passengers were entertained by a vast shoal of porpoises. They were at lunch when the liner struck and only those forward were aware of it. The whale, apparently just below the surface, was hit by.the sharp stem of the liner, and speed was reduced until the battered carcass was got rid of. ■ . . ■
