COMMANDANT A. WHITTAKER
-Commandant Annie Whittaker, a retired Salvation Army officer, died in the Wellington Public Hospital yesterday, aged 68. She entered the Salvation Army in 1905 at Oldham, England, and before coming to New Zealand on transfer in 1913 was engaged in field work in England and later in Ireland. Immediately before her transfer she was engaged in social work in London, and since her arrival in New Zealand devoted herself to women's social work.
Her first appointment here was to the Christchurch Maternity Hospital, and subsequently she served in the Pakatoa Inebriates' Home, the Wellington and Dunedin Girls' Homes and the Dunedin and Christchurch Women's Industrial Home. Commandant Whittaker was well thought of in the Salvation Army, and was considered one of its finest officers. She retired in 1928, and took up residence in Auckland, coming to Wellington only recently.
