STEWARDS' TOPWEIGHT
Black Thread, who shares top weight of 10.6 with Amigo in the Stewards' Handicap at Trentham next Tuesday, has not raced for nearly three months, but he is a sprinter capable of producing his best when fresh or after shortspells, and he is at home on soft going, Black Thread was a winner of the Shorts Handicap at Trentham two seasons ago, and though the track then was unusually fast for October he has shown at other times that he does not mind heavy ground. His form this season has been the best he has ever produced. At Easter he won the Auckland Easter Handicap, one mile, under 8.4 on an easy track, and on the second day on a faster track he was beaten only a head by s the lightweight Blonde Princess in the Huia Handicap, six furlongs, when carrying 9,8. Later he was third under 9.13 at Avondale, won the Havelock Flying, six furlongs, at Hastings under 9.12, and was second to Kathbella under 9.0 in the mile and a quarter Hastings Handicap on the final day. Following that race he was let up for a spell and he will be resuming next week if brought to Trentham.
