TWO SOUTHERN JUMPERS
Two southern jumpers who promised better things two seasons ago figure in the field for the Mariri Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase as well as the "Wellington Steeplechase at Trentham next Tuesday. They are Nightbound and Flashlight. ~ v Nightbound, a seven-year-old son of Night Raid, won the South Canterbury Steeples two years back and then twice finished in the money at the Grand National Meeting. Breaking down on the final, day, he did not reappear till a couple of months ago, when he easily won the two steeplechase events at the South Canterbury Meeting. He has not raced again since, but if he can be produced next week he would be one of the likeliest form prospects in the hack event, though a bigger race might be beyond him. m Flashlight, another horse who has not been too sound, was both-way fay : ourite and the winner of the Marin Hack Steeples two years ago, that being his third success in a row that winter. He did not race again at the meeting, because of a slight injury, but at the Grand National Meeting the following month he was second to Sunward in the Enfield Steeplechase under 10,11, beating Nightbound, 9.10, into third place. A little later he too had to be spelled, and though he has had four starts recently he has again been- in trouble and has been unable to show his best. At Ashburton last Saturday week he was one of the several horses brought down, but apparently he took no harm, as his schooling at Riccarton last week was his most attractive since his resumption.
