HUTT RIVER BOARD
A meeting of the Hutt River Board was held on Thursday, Dr. B. J. Dudley presiding.
The Housing Department was granted permission to put a 9-inch drain through the stop-bank.
The Engineer, Mr. H. Si'adden, reported that he did not think the diversion of a stream into the Waiwhetu Creek would greatly assist in relieving the stormwater problem. The question had been the subject some years ago of a joint report by a Public Works engineer, the Borough Engineer, and himself, and it was then considered that the only way to get rid of the stormwater during floods was by means of an emergency pumping system. It was decided to enforce the 10 per cent, penalty on overdue rates after March 29.
A donation of £5 5s was made towards the Soldiers' Welfare Appeal.
A motion of sympathy with Mr. J. W. Andrews, who is in hospital, was passed.
The secretary, Mr. A.- J. Gearing, reported that rates were coming in well. The board had estimated that it would receive £3300 and already £3500 had been paid. He estimated that 90 per cent, of the rates would be paid
